It’s that time of year

It takes some adjustment to living in Manchester to get used to some of the noises of the neighbourhood. For example, the rather annoying high-pitched tune that floats into the house every now and again is not the local iced dessert vendor, but rather the neighbourhood’s very own intoxicating substance salesman. Then there is the small child who stands in the playground of the primary school opposite us, banging his drum incessantly.

This has been particularly driven home to me just now as I heard 5 large loud bangs. My first instinct was not, given the time of year, to assume that someone had started their Bonfire Night celebrations a little prematurely … Instead, my first reaction was … It’s Manchester … therefore … large loud bangs equal gunfire!

It’s just a good thing that I’m enjoying my job so much and so settled here …
